i’m louis blachman, a director and writer from the san francisco bay area, now based in brooklyn, ny.
my work takes interest in breaking apart classic plays to make them both accessible and challenging for a modern audience, as well as using classical forms to guide my exploration of new work.
i’m interested in the expanses of theatricality, finding spectacle in simplicity, and using theater as a tool to illuminate the darkness and extremity of human nature, finding the light beneath.
as an assistant director, i have worked with & learned from james macdonald, trip cullman, michael mayer, danya taymor, leigh silverman, nicole a. watson, austin regan, & ben villegas randle.
my writing includes d.f.j. (finalist: 2024 o’neill npc; finalist: 14th national jewish playwriting contest) & four seasons total landscaping (winner: 2022 marilyn schwartz seven prize).
i was the bret c. harte fellow for berkeley rep’s 2023-2024 season, and am an associate member of sdc.
